Before watching Carol Dweck's Ted Talk, I had never heard of her or the idea of growth mindset, but after watching her talk I find it to be a very interesting phenomenon. While I was watching her talk I couldn't help but ask myself if I have a growth mindset or if I am fixed as to what I believe I can achieve. I think in certain times of my life I definitely have experienced both mindsets. I have always tried to do my best in school, but it was mainly to get the A and not necessarily to understand the material; however, since coming to college I have had to change my way of thinking of learning. I can especially see this in my math classes. Math has never been my thing, but I enjoyed the subject and forced myself to work hard to do well. This is especially true when I was recently studying for the GRE, I spent hours upon hours performing practice problems and watching videos in an attempt to learn more and raise my score. During that time, I had a growth mindset, even when I would do poorly I always knew that if I just practiced a little more I could do better. I'm thankful I had that mindset, instead of just accepting the fact that I was not very good at math, because it allowed me to raise my score!
Outside of school though, I don't think I had a growth mindset, I told myself I was introverted and didn't really try too much with making friends or going out of my way to deepen those relationships. It took me until last year to really start getting out of my comfort zone and making more an effort with all my friends and it paid off ten-fold. I would definitely be interested in learning more about growth mindset, even though it seems to be pretty straightforward I would be interested in seeing how it works being applied in different settings besides school work, for example home and relationship life like I have experienced. There is doubt I will need to have a growth mindset in my first graduate level class, I am already worried about my performance since all the other students in the class will graduate students and have more experience at that level than myself. Since I know I will more than likely have to put more work into proving myself capable of succeeding, I already expect to give more effort than I normally would for my other undergraduate classes. I can't wait to see how my growth mindset will have an affect on my graduate class!
